Thursday, March 17

I just spent the last half hour watching a woman across the road. She had a bundle of sticks that was taller that she was, and it would take 2 of us to reach our arms around. (I hope you can picture this.) She was an older woman and very thin. She laboured to roll the bundle around on the ground, as she put ties around it, top and bottom. Can you guess where I am going with this? Yes, eventually she sat on the ground and pulled one of those ties around her forehead. She couldn’t stand under the weight of it. In spite of her tremendous exertions, she failed to rise from the ground. Finally, a young woman ran to help her to stand up. It still took some time, as her legs wobbled under the burden. When she was finally standing, with the sticks balanced on her upper back, the younger woman left. However, a stick fell out of the bundle after the first few stiff steps. Yes, she tried to bend and retrieve it. As she lowered herself, she almost collapsed, but she recovered, stick in hand, and headed off to the steep hill going up to market! You may ask why I didn’t help her instead of watching? ......... good question..........no answer.........heart-breaking.........

  1. Some seek to ignore the plight of others and turn the other way. You choose to view in detail and extend to the other side of the planet a picture of the context of a people. Thank you for the truth, thank you for your presence there to be eyes for us, thank you for being witness of a moment in the life of a person as worthwhile as any of us.

May we all be challenged to respond and not seek to ignore any further.

  2. Hi Doreen,
I just arrived home from Wpg for a few days as I have a slight indication of virus or something, just cannot take a chance as Glenda's counts are'low'. So glad to finally be 'wired' again...no internet for 11 days...and have enjoyed catching up with your world. So thankful for your safe arrival to Bukavu and all the rewarding experiences so far. God is at work..what else can we say?!
Glenda is doing well, thanks be to God!!
Do you get email, or should we communicate through blog comments? I am so not up on these things.
Love you and God bless you, Colleen

  3. I love what Stan said. Sometimes we just have to watch to feel the full impact of how they deal with their day to day struggles and their tenacity to get a job done. Thanks for the picture. Enjoying your blog.

  4. I haven't checked for a bit, so it's nice to catch up on your "news"...unfortunately there is no end to the heartbreak here or there. We can only pray that God will show us which "one" he would have us choose to help each day! Praying for wisdom for you this day - one by one (or 216!! yeah for tons of students!!!) my dear.
    love you
