Kinshasa

Kinshasa.........a city of over 10 million people! I saw them waiting for buses after work. The line was so long, I wondered how they would all get home. I am told some do not arrive home until midnight.....have a short sleep then start over the next day......

(yes, the picture is a street in the city! We were trying to plow through it. I thought you might enjoy a wee peek?)

When we go to a village to show the Jesus Film, we need to find a good location for the speakers, so that hundreds of people can hear well......sometimes we need to be very creative!
I wonder what Hollywood would think of us? :) !

The last day of the Pastor Seminars, we present them with a certificate to indicate their attendance and completion of the material. They are very happy with this certificate.

The beauty of Congo is difficult to capture. Due to the limitations of the photographer, this is only a shadow of the actual view. There was mountain range after mountain range vanishing into the distance.........magnificent!

Off to Kalehe for the remainder of the week. It is less than 60kms away, so it will only take 3 hours or so driving. We will be holding seminar for 60 pastors, some of whom have walked 3 days to get to us!
I pray that they will be encouraged and strengthened in their honourable work. They are the workers from some of the 'frontline' areas of this planet, where the needs are beyond what we can fathom, security is non-existent, and the risk to just keep on living is substantial! They and their families have suffered significantly, but they keep on offering their lives for the Kingdom!
What a privilege to stand in the same room with them and get to know some of them!
Thanks from the bottom of my heart to those who have helped me to get there and stand with them! And to those who are here with me through your prayers, you are so needed!
They clearly read your love for them through this! They know it is neither easily affordable, nor a simple undertaking to be here.
In addition to teachings, we are able to offer them a full dinner and, in this case, due to the distances travelled, a small breakfast. Additionally, for the ones who have travelled so far, we pay for some kind of safe transport to return to their homes.

And all because you care!!!

the roads deserve their own space

November 29

Hello? hello? hello........hey! I made it! I’m on line!!! Hello world!

Well, we are very happy here on the convent. Yes, I said convent! They have a farm, and all the food is made right here! Wonderful!

It is situated on beautiful Lake Kivu and offers a peace and solitude that is quite calming. My dear husband.....fear not.....there is one small hardship......absolute silence at meal times!!......deal breaker!!

We leave each morning to drive (= carom) 1 hour to the village for pastor seminar. On the list of appalling roads with 1 being least, and 10 the most, this one rates a 9.9. I think we have ricocheted over one that was marginally worse?? To the usual craters in the roads here, add volcanic rock everywhere.....I tell you....!! Seat belts here, perform an entirely different function.....they serve to keep one in the interior of the car, and off of the ceiling!
By the time we arrived home, it was a struggle to find enough functional body parts to attempt a graceful exit from the vehicle! (‘graceful’?!...HA! In my dreams!)
Oh yes, it takes one hour because I am in the car......they drive that distance much faster! An intrepid people, indeed!

I resolved to show restraint.....I did NOT complain......no, no!
(to be perfectly honest though, IF anyone spoke English.......who could say?)

These seminars are so needed. In the wake of M23, there are many many displaced persons, crowded refugee camps.....and a demoralized society. The pastors are exhausted and overworked. There are 60 pastors and church leaders, men and women, attending. They are strengthened by the mere thought that they are not forgotten!

One pastor walked 60km. One lady took a motorbike, 160km, another 190km!! Testimony to the value of the program, I think?

I have their written note of thanks to you, for supporting this.

So, today, I decided to give my connecting tissues a trial run. They failed miserably! NOTHING is connected any longer! What’s with that?! Well, we are fearfully and wonderfully made....today is fearful, but it is only a few days journey to wonderful! :)

We have just completed a marathon race otherwise known as the 6 hour ‘drive’ to the Congo border and arrived as the border crossing closed, so we have another night in a hotel.  We cross tomorrow early get changed at home and head off to Bethsaida for church service.

ARRIVED SAFE (luggage too)

I have been travelling 23 hours now.....but that's not the interesting part.......
the interesting part is that when I left it was daytime, then it was night, then day then night.....all in 23 hours! Did the sun stand still again??!!

Spending tonight in Kigali and driving to DRC in the morning......can't wait!

I must remember to take a picture of how my husband successfully tamper-proofed the bins!

2 1/2 weeks until I leave!! The suitcases live on the dining room table until then. It takes planning to pack all you need for 7 weeks.

There are some exciting projects planned for this trip. I will keep you informed as they unfold.

There is so much that needs to be done, but each of us can only do our small part. It is too easy to let the magnitude of the problem overwhelm us. We look at the need of the whole country and feel too limited to have any effect. But a large problem can be faced in smaller pieces. So, too, when we stand together, we can make a difference.

If we are not going to do it....who is?

Meet my friendly neighbourhood gecko! This guy is quite tiny and apparently is a pretty good mosquito annihilator!
I was watching him sit on the wall, and thought I would video him. However, he sat there thinking I AM  the wall.....I AM the wall! ......so there was no movement to record. I switched off the camera and turned my attention to other matters.
Suddenly there was a scurrying noise above my head. I quickly turned to check out my little guest, but he had slithered about 4 feet across the wall....(that's 1.22m for the younger set).....
I kept my attention riveted to this cunning creature!
I reached for my camera once again......and again, no movement!
I tried reasoning with him..

me: seriously?!? You moved, you were here and now you are there, YOU MOVED! Don't even try pretending you didn't move!
him: I am the wall, I am the wall
me: fine then! I am not looking (after all, I should be able to psyc out a lizard)
him: (obstinate creature that he is)....I am the wall.....
me: .....waiting.....waiting.......
me: (changing tactics to overcome feelings of defeat at the hands of one with so small a brain) ok, I am taking your picture!

So here he is folks......enjoy....

This is my daughter in Africa. She cooked meals for the 6 member team, in this kitchen. The stove had no chimney, so the kitchen was always full of smoke. We took turns running outside to clear our streaming eyes. She suffered the most of course.
The first morning, as I was teaching seminar, a heavy fog rolled in the windows. I suggested that she might have left the stove on......
In spite of the difficult circumstances, she cooked wonderful meals for all of us! (at great personal cost)

The day has finally arrived.......my tickets are booked!

I leave November 20th and return (early this year) January 9th, 2015.

For those of you with questions, the internet says;

"The outbreak in the country (DRC), where the Ebola virus was first discovered nearly 40 years ago, is a distinct strain from the far more drastic Ebola crisis ravaging West Africa, where more than 2,200 people have died this year, the worst on record. The Congo outbreak, by contrast, is confined to four villages in one county, and is linked to one initial case, first reported to the health organization on Aug. 26."

--------

That county is in the far north of the country, which I have never visited......yet :)

My husband has a vision to bring some instruction on electrical, among other things. I think these photos justify the need?

Only 9% of the population have access to power and for those who have access, it is intermittent at best......

Advice please.....

my past trip, half of my luggage was stolen.
I use Rubbermaid bins with 6 ziplocks on each one. They were cut open on each container......
Soooooo, I'm putting this out there to get suggestions. What do you advise? Anyone have ideas?
I was thinking to add duct tape to the seal??
I love the protection the bins offer, now I need to consider the security issue.
I am told that if there is anything illegal in your luggage, you are responsible, regardless of how it got there.......
can you say 'YIKES' ?!!
I would appreciate your input, can you help me?

break time in one of my classes this year........

 'Where's Waldo?'
I think that was tea growing in the background. There are many large fields of tea. However, farm crops remain a problem. When the crops are almost ready, they are stolen. As a result, many farmers have decided not to plant crops......"then they will starve along with us"

Hands are meticulously washed before and after eating. After?? Yes, because we often eat with our fingers. However, after eating my meal with my fingers, it was tactfully suggested that I also wash my face......
That inner sense of triumph in my newly acquired skill dissolved before I even had a minute to savour it......
Then pride further ruined the moment by asking me "so how many people have you just talked to on the way to the back to wash?
Feeling successful remains an unrealized goal......sigh

For those who are wondering........yes, I took this picture from the front porch of our accommodation, at the top of a mountain.........well ok.........to be perfectly honest.........there was no font in the actual scene! Hopefully you will overlook this minor deviation from reality?

THANK YOU to the young man in our church for making these for children in the Congo!
For those of you, like me, who have not seen these before......
This is the newest fad with the young set.
They are rubberized elastics, knitted together to make small bracelets etc.
They are light and almost weightless, so......easy to transport to the Congo!
I think the children will be thrilled!
A perfect offering from children in Canada to children in Congo, don't you agree?

This is a common sight. Homes built into the side of hills and mountains. When there are heavy rains, however, poor foundations will not hold the houses. Many lives are lost as houses cascade down the hillside. There were many such tragedies when I was there this year.
The city homes are even closer and more unstable. Homes are built quickly and often with little or no planning. The goal is to shelter their families as rapidly as possible, whatever it takes.
The city has gone from a few hundred thousand to over one million in just a few years, and people continue to flood into Bukavu seeking security. The internet tells me that there are more U.N. troops based in Bukavu than any other single location on earth! (The last number I heard was 22,000)
This leads to a two-tiered financial system. Everything has one price for the local people and another for foreigners. There are beautiful homes alongside shacks, expensive cars driving past barefoot people carrying heavy burdens.
It really makes you think, when those hard working people living in hastily constructed shacks are more gracious, generous, and caring.........
They have taught me much about life and what is important. Hopefully it will change me!

These cooks fed about 65 of us for the week of the seminar. The meals were very good. They worked so hard. This is their kitchen;

I enjoy feeding a crowd (especially family!), but I don't think I could manage it in this kitchen. There are probably more kitchens in the world like this one than there are like mine?

This sign was posted in the hotel washroom, next to the sink. In a country that struggles to have any water, it is a sober caution. It is a reminder of many who have none and how far they travel to have some. Did you know that in certain seasons, the young children will get up at 3:00a.m. to go out and search for water? They hunt around the city until they find some, and then carry home heavy containers on their backs. I am often moved by how young the child and how heavy the load.

Saturday, May 31, 2014

from my window, I watched them dig (by hand) a foundation for a new house. The women carried one heavy bag full of soil at a time to make this large pile that you see. They would hoist each heavy bag up onto their heads, climb up a steep set of stairs, then up to the top of this mound and empty the bag. They would work from early morning, for about 9 hours, with a short 30 minute break for lunch. Instead of complaining, they sing. One day, a man was laughing so hard I went to wee what was going on. He was absolutely squealing and rolling on the ground with laughter! Such happiness in the midst of great trial......I have much to learn......
However, as they dug out the area up to the white plastic fence you see in the background, they weakened the foundation of the large brick fence just behind the while plastic. We experienced heavy rainfall which also washed away needed foundation for the fence. Eventually the fence collapsed onto the roof you see behind it. Imagine the residents' shock to their early morning routines as the earth shook and bricks came crashing through their roof?! Thankfully, there were no injuries. People all around rushed from their homes to offer assistance. It's what you do when there is no '911'.

some brilliant people in Beasejour, made cloth covers for balloons! (they also sent the balloons......so thoughtful)  They took up virtually no weight and no space in the luggage, and make an excellent ball for the children!
They were having a blast throwing them, kicking them, and playing catch.......so much fun! Thank you for this great idea!
Everyone who has seen these, has commented on what a remarkable idea this is.
I would be happy to take some more???

Kudos to Beasejour!!

One day I asked a question......"how many of you have walked more than 20k to come to this seminar? Please stand"

Here was the response........

yup.........almost everyone! Someone even walked 57k they told me! These are dedicated, and seriously committed pastors, who love their people and their communities. They work hard, at great personal cost to move their communities forward. They are hidden heroes. I always feel unworthy to stand with them!

These seminars are made possible because friends like you stand with us.........

I was commissioned, by them, to bring heartfelt thanks to all of you! (please receive my thanks too!)

In the news and on the internet, many refer to the Congo as "the rape capital of the world".......how can 5 words contain such heart break? There are so many shattered lives hidden in those 5 words......broken homes.....destroyed families......disease......and emotional or even physical deaths......here is one of them.....she was soon to give birth......age?.....13......

How can we help?......
support one person at a time.......
encourage one person at a time.......
help one person at a time find sustainable ways to support themselves.....
over time,  the message will become clear.....
THIS IS NOT OK WITH US!!

( I have not done this before, but if you are with me, click the 'cool' box below.....it will be your statement that it is NOT OK with you either.....also, it's nice to know you're hearing me.....thanks, my friends!)
