We’re back!

We had a 3 1/2 hour drive to Lemera, going through Rwanda on the way. The roads were great until the last 29k or so. Then it was something out of a 4 wheel drive commercial on T.V. Most of it was a one lane up a mountain, with hair pin turns leaving you feeling like you are suspended in space. At times, the violent bouncing of the vehicle threatened the word  ‘suspended’ (try ‘plummet’?)Each hour the direction changes.....for one hour it is up only and then the next it is down only. Quite an adventure for a prairie dweller! (just for the record....I was NOT apprised of this information in advance.....wise choice on their part!) On the way home, we chose the wrong hour to be traveling! Solution? Ride your horn around each turn.....and in my case....hold your breath :) So, when I say ‘WE’RE BACK!’....it’s no small thing!

So, this morning, I was searching for something in a dark corner, trying to hold my iphone for light. The other hand was attempting a 2 hand job.....after a while it crossed my mind that there was power, so I turned the light on! A lesson in how to complicate the simple things......the main ‘simple thing’ being me! So, my dear tolerant husband....I will be easy on the hydro bills when I return :)

Lemera is a wonderful village. We toured the school of 500, and left a couple of soccer balls. The whole school cheered to have them. We also brought some of your other donations.....reading glasses, baby blankets, office supplies, ties for leaders, and a few miscellaneous items. When I saw the needs in the hospital, I apologized for such small gifts....they graciously told me that no gift is small! We had a great time in our classes, with men who walked up from Uvira....about 34K.....and some who came from Mwenga area....a walk that required an overnight in the jungle! Such sacrifice.....very humbling. We had a great time together, ending with a church service on Sunday of 980 people.
Many encouraging words, many greetings sent home to my family, church, and supporters! And also, perhaps the greatest compliment.....many, many invitations to return.....may it be so!

Oh yes...leaving the village.......keep in mind this is 3-4 hours away from Bukavu.....a car stopped us to exchange greetings......I know these people!!!! A missionary from the U.S. and my translator from last year.....gave me a sense of belonging!

  2. Praying for continued health and safety for you Doreen, but now I think I need to step up the 'safety ' prayers...hairpin turns at high altitudes...makes me white-knuckled and nauseous just thinking about that!
    Blessings,
